In January 2003 (Vol. 8, No. 1), Int J LCA established the section LCM, edited by Gerald Rebitzer and Matthias Finkbeiner, Yasunari Matsuno, Wulf-Peter Schmidt, Thomas E. Swarr. Publications covering LCM date back to 1996, the year of the journal's inception. Int J LCA reported on all essential events in the life cycle of LCM so far.

The Editorial (p. 1) and the papers in the Prologue (pp. 2–3 and 4) reflect the progression in LCM along the conference series LCM and InLCA/LCM. The Epilogue (pp. 5–6) senses a vision of the future.
