Journal of Soils and Sediments – Protection, Risk Assessment, and Remediation
The 'Journal of Soils and Sediments – Protection, Risk Assessment, and Remediation' (official abbreviation: JSS – J Soils & Sediments) has been founded in 2001 as part of the ScientificJournals' family published by ecomed verlag Landsberg/Bavaria, Germany (http://www.scientificjournals.com/sj/jss/startseite). These journals share two features: 1. The interdisciplinarity, and 2. the specific mixture of articles consisting of scientific papers as there are research articles, review articles, case studies, commentaries, discussion and opinion papers, and of magazine-like papers such as editorials, letters to the editor, book reviews, reports from research and technology, and from policy and legislation, conference reports and announcements, news concerning latest trends and developments.

JSS – Aims and Scope. JSS is the first journal entirely devoted to soils and sediments, hereby dealing not only with contaminated, but also with intact and disturbed soils and sediments. JSS elucidates the common aspects as well as the differences between these two environmental compartments. JSS is an interdisciplinary journal intended to be of benefit to the scientist as well as to the practitioner.

Topics:
  • Research on effects caused by disturbances and contamination
  • Research, strategies and technologies for prediction, prevention, and protection
  • Research, strategies and technologies for identification and characterisation
  • Research, strategies and technologies for treatment, remediation and reuse
  • Strategies for risk assessment and management
  • Research on and the implementation of quality standards
  • International regulation and legislation
Target groups: environmental scientists chemists, biologists, hydrologists, limnologists, geographers, geologists, mineralogists, environmental managers, agriculturists, foresters, landscape designers, technologists, waste and remediation specialists, lawyers
Keywords: General for soils and sediments: anthropogenic impacts, bioavailability, ecology, ecotoxicological effects, metals, natural attenuation, organic compounds, risk assessment, risk management, species sensitivity
Keywords for Soils: acidification, remediation: including bioremediation and phytoremediation, soil processes, soil function
Target areas: academia and industry, research and technology, consultancy, administrative bodies, non-government organisations, legislation and regulation
Keywords for Sediments: Sediment/water interaction, Remediation of contaminated sediments, Management of sediments and dredged material

JSS – Associations. JSS is in the comfortable position to co-operate with two partners that ideally reflect the scope of the journal: 1. SedNet, the Demand-Driven, European Sediment Research Network (www.SedNet.org), and 2. IUSS, the International Union of Soil Sciences (www.iuss.org). On the occasion of the Inaugural SedNet Conference, 22–23 April 2002 in Venice/Italy, JSS has become the 'Associated Journal of SedNet', and occasionally the 17th World Congress of Soil Science, 14–21 August 2002 in Bangkok/Thailand, JSS was accepted as an 'IUSS Co-operating Journal' by the IUSS Council.

Jos Brils, the SedNet Co-ordinator [editorial in JSS 2 (1) 2–3 (2002)]: "The association of SedNet and the Journal of Soils and Sediments (JSS) is special. Both have a strong scope to sediment management issues. JSS is regarded by SedNet as a very promising new Journal for the publication of SedNet findings and of sediment research results obtained by the SedNet participants. These participants are explicitly invited and encouraged to publish in JSS. In return, JSS offers a reduced subscription fee to SedNet participants, which is warmly appreciated."

Winfried E.H. Blum, the (past) Secretary-General of IUSS [editorial in JSS 2 (3) 106–107 (2002)]: "This new association opens interesting possibilities for the co-operation between IUSS and JSS. ... A co-operation with JSS can be organised on all four division levels: 'Soil in Space and Time', 'Soil Properties and Processes', 'Soil Use and Management' and 'The Role of Soils in Sustaining Society and the Environment', because all these areas have a definite connection to soils and sediments. The basis of such a co-operation is broad, because IUSS has currently about 50,000 members in 143 countries, about 80% of them organised in national soil science societies. Moreover, IUSS comprises 5 regional societies, in Africa, East Africa, Central and West Africa, Southeast Asia, and Latin America. The tools of the scientific communication of IUSS are, 1. the website (www.iuss.org), 2. the publication of 2 bulletins per year with about 120–130 pages each, and 3. the ten co-operating international scientific journals. Every four years, a 'World Congress of Soil Science' is organised, the next one will be held in Philadelphia, PA, USA, in 2006."

Another association concerns the Battelle Sediments Conferences (www.battelle.org/sedimentscon) of which JSS belongs to the Co-operating Organisations. One of the consequences from the co-operation with JSS is the beneficial connection of the two sediments conferences to be held in Venice/Ialy, September/October 2003, 1. the Intermediate SedNet Conference, and 2. the Battelle 'Conference on Remediation of Contaminated Sediments'. The SedNet Conference takes place on 29–30 September ending up 5:00 p.m., and the Battelle Conference adjoins on 30 September 6:00 p.m. through October 3.

JSS – Abstracts Services. JSS is a peer-reviewed journal with at least two referees for each contribution. It is listed, indexed and abstracted by the following documentation services: BIOSIS, CABI (CAB International), CAS (Chemical Abstracts Service), CEABAâ-VTB: DECHEMA, Elsevier Geo Abstracts, LexisNexis Group, UFOR / ULIT / URDB
Also, JSS has applied for the coverage by ISI-SCI (Institute for Scientific Information – Science Citation Index), which takes at least three years to be included.

JSS in Print and Online. JSS is published as printed and online versions (http://www.scientificjournals.com/sj/jss/issues). Accepted articles are published in OnlineFirst (http://www.scientificjournals.com/sj/jss/onlineFirst) immediately after proofreading. They can be cited by way of the DOI (Digital Object Identifier).

A comfortable Subject Index (http://www.scientificjournals.com/sj/all/search) as well as an Author Index (http://www.scientificjournals.com/sj/all/authorIndex) guide through the journal.

JSS – Appearance. 4 editions with 64 pages each.

JSS – Submission of Papers
Before submitting the manuscript, the authors are requested to send an abstract by E-mail to the Editors-in-Chief and to the Publisher Editor (almut.heinrich@hjr-verlag.de).

The abstract should present the following structure:
  1. Goal, Scope and Background
  2. Methods (or Main Features)
  3. Results and Discussion
  4. Conclusion
  5. Recommendations and Outlook

We shall then either invite you to submit the complete paper or discuss further details with you which we think may prove to be necessary.

When submitting the paper, please provide it in hard copy and electronic format. Figures and tables should be embedded, whereas the final submission requires text, figures, tables, list of figure legends and table captions to be stored as separate files. Even the first submission must not be a mere draft but has to be formatted in accordance with the Instructions for Authors.
