Formation of a new SedNet/SETAC Advisory Group on Sediments (April 2005)

SedNet - the European Sediment Network - will cooperate with SETAC - the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry - by facilitating and initiating the formation of a new advisory group on sediments within SETAC.
SedNet has been an EU-funded network consisting of people from science, industry and governments, aiming at
  • improvement of the understanding of the relation between sediment contamination (hazard) and its actual impact to the functioning of ecosystems (ecological status) and development of strategies to assess and manage the risks involved,
  • discussion of management solutions that carefully balance social, economic and environmental values and are set within the context of the whole river system, and
  • further development and integration of sustainable sediment management into EU environmental policy.

SETAC is a non-profit, worldwide professional society comprising individuals and institutions from academia, government and industry, that provides a forum where scientists, managers, and other professionals exchange information and ideas for the development and use of multidisciplinary scientific principles and practices leading to sustainable environmental quality.

A lot of research and attention within SETAC has been directed towards sediments (e.g. 2 Pellston workshops were dedicated to sediment topics) but without providing a specific platform to discuss the variety of issues connected with contamination and environmental management of sediments.

The advisory group on sediments within SETAC, supported by SedNet members, aims at emphasizing the importance of research on quality and quantity issues of sediments and of the development and discussion of management concepts - with a focus on European environmental policy.

The first planning meeting will take place during the 15th Annual Meeting in Lille, France, on Tuesday 24 May 13:15-14:00 in room Hainot. All interested parties are welcome to join and take part in the discussion.

JSS and SedNet - Special association of SedNet and the Journal of Soils and Sediments (JSS).
The association of SedNet and the Journal of Soils and Sediments (JSS) is special. Both have a strong scope to sediment
management issues.

JSS is regarded by SedNet as a very promising new Journal for the publication of SedNet findings and of sediment research
results obtained by the SedNet participants.
These participants are explicitly invited and encouraged to publish in JSS.
In return, JSS offers a reduced subscription fee to SedNet participants, which is warmly appreciated.
