The lead concentrations of spruce needles from six Austrian sample plots were determined. The six sample plots were subject to stresses of different intensity and the needle material was collected over a period of almost thirty years. Using the available data a classification scheme was established which can be used to describe the anthropogenic accumulation of lead for remote and rural areas. Lead concentrations showed a decrease during the investigation period and for rural areas, statistical evidence of such decrease was furnished. In the present paper, the decrease in lead concentrations is discussed together with leademission data and data about the lead-pollution load.
