This document is not intended to be a comprehensive overview of the state of the North Sea. Rather, it is a review of some of the most recently published literature which contains new information on the North Sea environment and provides evidence that in some areas environmental degradation is more advanced than commonly acknowledged in reports produced by government and international agencies. It is primarily designed as an information document, and all reference sources are fully documented. It is hoped that the review will stimulate wider discussion about more suitable strategies for the protection of the North Sea than those which are already in place.
