DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.1065/EHS2001.11.011 - - - Poland has recently faced numerous environmental problems, one of which, waste management, has appeared to be most significant. Although environmental attitudes and beliefs toward the environment among the Polish public have risen considerably over the last decade, they still have not reached a satisfactory level. The objective of this study was to establish the level of environmental knowledge and awareness (mainly toward municipal solid waste management - MSW) and how it is reflected in the attitudes and environment-related activities among secondary school students. This work was conducted using a questionnaire on the basic MSW issues. Results revealed that the majority of respondents possessed only a limited knowledge and understanding of environmental issues (wastes included). Ecologistic knowledge and attitudes did not correlate with the scores the students achieved in the survey. Recommendations are made regarding the actions that need to be included in a formal and non-formal system of education. | | Keywords: behavior, secondary school; ecological awareness; education, ecological; MSW; municipal solid waste (MSW); Nature teachers; Poland; Polish secondary education |
