Environmental Science: GIS and Remote Sensing
Defining Ecoregions as Framework for the Assessment of Ecological Monitoring Networks in Germany by means of GIS and Classification and Regression Trees (CART) Winfried Schroeder; Gunther Schmidt Corresponding author:: Univ.-Prof. Dr. Winfried Schroeder; Institut für Umweltwissenschaften, Hochschule Vechta, Postfach 15 53, D-49364 Vechta; e-mail: wschroeder@iuw.uni-vechta.de
DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.1065/ehs2001.03.006 --- Ecoregionalizations can be used for assessing the statistical representativity of environmental monitoring networks. A method is described of how to define Germanys ecoregions by GIS-data on soils, vegetation, climate and elevation using Classification And Regression Trees (CART). The resulting landscape units can be linked to metadata on measurement parameters and methods, quality control and assurance measures or site locations of Germanys environmental monitoring networks.
Exemplarily, the landcape representativity of sites of air quality measurements is calculated. | | Keywords: CART; Classification and Regression Trees (CART); ecological monitoring networks; environmental monitoring networks; Geographic Information System (GIS); GIS; potential natural vegetation; regionalization by means of Classification and Regression Trees (CART); representativity of monitoring sites for landscape structure; research articles |
