Curriculum vitae:Dr. Reifferscheid is graduated in microbiology, biochemistry, plant physiology and zoology. PhD degree in genetic toxicology in 1993. Between 1993 and 2002 he worked as research scientist at the University of Mainz, Germany, on specific toxicity potentials of environmental samples on the suborganismic and molecular level. Dr. Reifferscheid has been working for more than 18 years on the investigation, measurement and assessment of genotoxicity and mutagenicity of chemicals and environmental samples and underlying molecular mechanisms with focus on the development, testing and validation of short-term test systems.
Important milestones were:
- Development of the umu-test for water and waste water testing (Reifferscheid et al., 1991; 1996) an indicator test system for genotoxicity based on the bacterial SOS-response.
- Development of an immunological DNA-synthesis inhibition tests for the detection of carcinogen induced inhibition of DNA-synthesis (Heil and Reifferscheid, 1992).
- National and international standardisation of the umu-test according to DIN und ISO (DIN 38 415-3, ISO13 829) on the basis of Dr. Reifferscheid’s Ph.D. thesis; Therewith the umu-test has been the first national and international standardised test system for genotoxicity.
- National and international standardisation of the Ames test (plate incorporation assay) according to DIN and ISO (DIN 38 415-4, ISO 16240)
- International standardisation of the in vitro micronucleus assay acc. to ISO (ISO 21427-2)
- Development of a fluctuation test version of the Ames test for environmental samples (Reifferscheid and v. Oepen, 2002; Perez et al. 2003; Reifferscheid et al. 2004)
- Development of the MutaGen test system (Schmid et al., 2003, Reifferscheid et al., 2005; national and international patent Nr. 101 32 280.1 und 101 C 007): a novel ultra short-term mutagenicity test based on (plasmid borne) reversion to antibiotic resistance gene in combination with inducible reporter gene detection.
Dr. Reifferscheid is chairman of the DIN and ISO working groups ‘genotoxicity’ and a member of several national committees for the standardization of biological test systems
Since his move to the German Federal Institute of Hydrology in January 2003 he is leading the working field ‚specific toxicology‘. Key activities are bacterial and eukaryotic genotoxicity and mutagenicity, endocrine disruption and immunotoxicity.
