She graduated at the Faculty of Mining and Geology, Department for the Exploration of mineral resources, in 1988.
From February 1989 she has started her career in the Institute of Mines in Belgrade, in the group for computer modelling of ore deposits, where she has worked on several of the most important mineral deposits in Serbia and Montenegro, Bosnia and Hercegovina, and FYR Macedonia. In 2000 she became assistant lecturer at the Faculty of Mining and Geology for the subject "Coal deposits".
Dragana Životić was awarded the Master's Degree in July 2001 on successful completition of M.SC thesis "Petrography and quality of coal from the Kostolac basin and its energetic potential".
Dragana Životić is author of more than forty professional and scientific papers. The 23 of the most important were presented at domestic or international symposia, and published in Serbian journals. She has worked on many projects, most of them related to geology, petrology and quality of coal from the most important Serbian and former Yugoslav coal basins (Kolubara, Kostolac, Kosovo, Suvodol, Stanari, Ugljevik). She participated in project "Genetic and industrial classification of brown coals of Serbia, IGCP project 329 "Neogene of Central Serbia", Project "Mineral Resources of Serbia: Minerogenetic characteristics and economic importance", and was the leader of the project "Genesis and quality of brown coals in Serbia".
