Curriculum Vitae
Prof. Dr. Walter Klöpffer was born on June 6, 1938, in Graz, Austria. After his studies of chemistry and his PhD of Physical Chemistry at the Karl-Franzens-University in Graz, he joined the Battelle Institute, Frankfurt/Main, Germany, in 1964. He has been living in Frankfurt/M. since that time.
During the first 10-15 years at Battelle, his main field of interest was the spectroscopy and photophysics of aromatic polymers and monomeric model compounds. After this period, he switched to the study of environmental processes of chemicals and the assessment of chemicals.
Since 1975, he is a professor for Physical Chemistry at the Johannes-Gutenberg-University in Mainz.
In 1995, three years after joining C.A.U. GmbH (http://www.cau-online.de/oecobil.htm), he was appointed as the editor-in-chief of ´The International Journal of Life Cycle Assessment´, a newly founded periodical.
The renewed international interest in persistent organic pollutants (POPs) induced a revival of older research work on exposure modelling and, more general, on the application of the precautionary principle to the assessment of organic chemicals. | | Areas of interest: | | life cycle assessment (LCA) | | Vorsorgeprinzip | | Tributylzin (TBT) | | tributyltin | | precautionary principle | | polymers | | physical chemistry | | Persistente Organische Schadstoffe | | persistent organic pollutants | | exposure modelling | | |
