His 47 years of research encompass four areas critical to forest science:

1) Basic Forest Ecology – exploring the interaction of forest plants with their environment;

2) Silviculture – the culturing of forest trees to meet management objectives;

3) Vegetation Management and Environmental Chemistry – studying ways of managing vegetation and their environmental consequences; and,

4) Interaction of Forest Management Systems on Aquatic Systems and Terrestrial Wildlife.
