Curriculum vitae:drsea@cvrl.org

Dr. Apitz is currently the Director of SEA Environmental Decisions, Ltd., an independent consultancy which provides technical and policy support and input on issues of freshwater and marine environmental management and research to an international group of clients. She plays an integrating role in complex, interdisciplinary programmes in which basic and applied research must be brought together, critically assessed and then linked to environmental policy and applications. Key interests are in the fields of in situ and on site sensor validation; multi-instrument integrated field studies; field study design and synthesis; PAH biodegradation studies; freshwater, marine and sediment environmental assessment, management and policy; technology assessment, integration and transfer; environmental security; and watershed-scale, mutli-stressor and ecosystem-based decision frameworks. A particular speciality is providing cross-disciplinary and cross-organisational intergration, bridging the gaps between scientists, engineers, policy makers and the public. As such, much of her work is carried out in collaborative networks with other consultancies, universities and government agencies. Notable among recent projects is integration and technology transfer for the EC FP6-funded Coastal Ocean Benthic Observatories (COBO; www.cobo.org.uk) programme, which integrates innovative in situ technologies to study how benthic ecosystem structure and function respond to various perturbations.

Dr. Apitz has played and continues to play a major role in the evaluation and development of science and policy on environmental management, sitting on a number of US, UK, EC and international workgroups, science advisory boards and research teams on this complex topic. Dr. Apitz is also a visiting professor at the Integrated Earth System Sciences Institute at the University of Cranfield.
