Curriculum vitae:James Fava is managing director of Five Winds International, a business improvement service firm based in US, Germany, Canada and the Netherlands. Five Winds International helps firms improve their business performance by integrating knowledge of the environmental and social pressures facing their businesses into core business practices. In order words - use environmental and social aspects as catalysts to drive innovation and competitiveness to increase value to shareholders and for society.
The Five Winds International team has expertise in business strategy, engineering and material science, industrial design, environmental science, resource economics, social performance measurement and government policy. Five Winds clients represent many large multi-national companies, including Carnival, Shell, Unilever, Procter & Gamble, Rohm & Haas, Exelon, Nike, Herman Miller, Rio Tinto, Kennecott, Borax, BASF, GM, Black & Decker, DuPont, ALCOA, S.C. Johnson, JohnsonDiversey, and 3M. We also work with national (e.g., Industry Canada), state and local governments (e.g., Denver International Airport), industry associations (e.g., International Copper Association, International Council for Mining and Metals) and multi-lateral organizations such as the UNEP and OECD.
Fava was head of delegation and lead US expert to a number of the ISO environmental management systems standards. As a result he understands not only what the standards say but the rationale and logic behind the wording. All firms for which Five Winds has led ISO 14001 implementation teams have achieved their ISO 14001 certification.
Dr. Fava is widely published and is a regular invited speaker throughout the world. He is often quoted in newsletters and magazine articles. He is currently vice chair of the UNEP/SETAC Life Cycle Initiative, a member of the Advisory Group for the Kenan-Flagler Center for Sustainable Enterprises, and chair of the Working Group B within the US Green Building Council LCA into LEED initiative.
