Dr. Cornelis Johannes (Kees) van Leeuwen studied biology at the University of Utrecht (The Netherlands), where he also obtained a PhD on the ecotoxicological effects of pesticides.

In 1987 he joined The Netherlands Ministry of the Environment (VROM), becoming head of the Risk Assessment and Environmental Quality Division in 1991.

Since 1992, he held a part-time professorship in environmental toxicology at the Research Institute for Toxicology (RITOX) at the University of Utrecht.

In 1997, Dr. van Leeuwen became the Deputy Head of the Centre for Substances and Risk assessment (CSR) at The Netherlands National Institute of Public Health and the Environment (RIVM), involved in general management and research co-ordination.

In January 2002, Dr. van Leeuwen joined the IHCP as Director.

In March 2007 he started a new position as “Principal Scientist” at TNO Quality of Life in Zeist, the Netherlands (3 days per week).
