Curriculum vitae:Prof. Helias A. Udo de Haes graduated in 1968 in biology at Leiden University. He performed his PhD research in the Max Planck Institut fuer Verhaltensphysiologie, in Seewiesen, Germany.

After some years at the Technical University in Delft he joined the new department on Environmental Biology at Leiden University.

In 1978 he founded CML as an interfacultary institute at the same university, of which institute he is still the scientific director.

Since the beginning of the eighties, research regarding the development of tools for environmental systems analysis came on the agenda of the institute, in particular Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Substance Flow Analysis (SFA).

Personally he is very active in the field of LCA, mainly at an international level. He is chairman of the LCA Steering Committee of SETAC-Europe, and also of the working group on Life Cycle Impact Assessment of this organisation.

Furthermore, he contributes since about 1995 to the standardisation of LCA under ISO and is designated scientific director of the UNEP/SETAC Life Cycle Initiative for identifying best available practice in Life Cycle Assessment and Life Cycle Management.
Areas of interest:
life cycle impact assessment (LCIA)
ecolabelling
