Roland W. Scholz, 1950, holds the Chair of Environmental Sciences: Natural and Social Science Interface at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zurich, Switzerland), he’s Director of the Institute for Human-Environment Systems (HES) at ETH Zurich, is adjunct professor of Psychology at the University of Zurich (Privatdozent), and was Founder/president of the Organization and Decision Making Consultants (GOE Zurich).

He was elected as the fifth holder of the King Carl XVI Gustaf's Professorship 2001/2002 hosted at the Center of Environment and Sustainability of Chalmers University of Technology and Gothenborg University (Sweden), and was visiting professor at the Department of Urban Studies and Planning at MIT (Boston, USA), at the Institute of Innovation- and Environmental Management at Karl-Franzens-University of Graz (Austria), and at the University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences of Vienna (Austria).

He graduated in Mathematics, Psychology, and Educational Sciences (Dipl.-Math., University of Marburg, Germany, 1976), Social Psychology (Dr. phil., University of Mannheim, Germany, 1979), and Cognitive Psychology (Dr. phil. habil., University of Mannheim, Germany, 1987).

He specialized in Decision Sciences and Systems Analysis, particularly Game Theory, Bargaining and Negotiation, Decision Making under Uncertainty, Cognitive Psychology and Organizational Psychology.

His current research field is environmental decision making in human-environment interactions. Current topics are complex environ-mental system analysis and complex problem solving. Based on experience in mathematical and psychological decision research, risk assessment and modeling, in vivo and in vitro research on negotiation and bargaining, practical consulting experience, and research into the theory of science, he has developed a methodology for integrating qualitative and quantitative knowledge in complex real world case studies.

The group headed by Roland Scholz conducts projects in environmental modeling and evaluation, waste resource management, sustainable finance, and environmental cognition. The annual transdisciplinary ETH-UNS case studies on sustainable urban, regional, and organizational development are a major activity of the UNS group.
