PD Dr. Jan Ahlers. In 1992 Jan Ahlers became head of the Section ´Risk Assessment of Existing Chemicals´, Federal Environmental Agency (UBA) Berlin, Germany. His main responsibilities concern ´Risk Assessment´ and (in part) ´Risk Management´ of existing chemicals within the national existing chemicals program (BUA), the EU existing chemicals regulation as well as the existing chemicals programs of OECD and UN.
He participated actively in the elaboration of the Technical Guidance Documents for Risk Assessment of New and Existing Chemicals (TGD), which is the scientific basis for the risk assessment of industrial chemicals in the EU. For the TGD revision, he and his team elaborated proposals for risk assessment of chemicals in soil and sediment (see ´The Newly Proposed Risk Assessment Concept for the Sediment Compartment´ by Caroline Riedhammer and Beatrice Schwarz-Schulz JSS 1/2, 105–110, 2001).
Since 2001, Jan Ahlers is head of the section ´Ecotoxicological Assessment´ responsible for environmental effect assessments of new and existing chemicals, biocides, pesticides as well as drugs. He performs lectureships in ecotoxicological risk assessment at the Free University of Berlin and at the University of Bayreuth and is engaged in the process of developing a curriculum in ecotoxicology in Germany. | | Areas of interest: | | ecotoxicological effects | | international regulation and legislation | | management for the impact of organic or inorganic | | Risikobewertung | | strategies for risk assessment | | Ökotoxikologie (Chemikalien, PSM, Arzneimittel) | | |
